Some favourite images

“I watched the elephants march across that red dust savanna as if they had an appointment with destiny.”
This is the image that inspired the opening lines of my feature ‘Africa: A Road Less Travelled’. It’s such a classic Africa picture that we used it on the cover of my first book A Safari Guide to the Mammals of East Africa, published by Macmillan. It was taken from the veranda of Kilaguni Lodge in Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park.

Zebra in Etosha

The dust in the air makes this a moody shot, yet the zebra stand out in stark contrast. Etosha’s desert waterholes act like magnets for the huge variety of wildlife in this part of northern Namibia.

The Okavango Delta

Another classic, taken amid the reeds of the Okavango, with an African Fish Eagle soaring overhead. In the days before luxury lodges and airstrips, this was the only way to travel the waterways of the delta.

Paradise on earth

When I’m asked about my favourite places, the Seychelles always finds its way to my lips. It’s ridiculously beautiful.
